Well, I do not know where to begin this week with all the mayhem we have had in the UK, in the North, here at home, in France and, I am sure, elsewhere. Some of the mayhem was good, but some was bad.

A LECTURE on the Galway women who built bombs for the British Army in WWI in the Galway munitions factory, and a film screening on the life nad work of Michael Davitt, will both take place in the Galway City Museum.

It may not be scorched on the Irish psyche as the Great Famine of 1845-52 is, but the famine of 1879, which affected the west more than any other region, brought suffering and led to an increase in agrarian offences committed by furious and despairing tenants. In 1879 the Great Famine was still a painful memory for a large number of people. Most had witnessed first-hand family and friends die a slow, torturous, death by starvation, and had parted indefinitely with family members who had emigrated in an attempt to escape the living hell of famine. The population of Mayo fell by almost 30 per cent during the Great Famine due to death and emigration, and by 1879 the county was still recovering.

The Jackie Clarke Collection and Library in Ballina has seen a steady increase in the numbers of visitors coming through its doors over the past number of years, but further investment and planning is needed to ensure the library is able to reach its full potential, it was said this week.

The Mayo Football League has announced that the recipients of the prestigious Henry Downes Service to Football Awards for 2015 are Patrick English from Achill Rovers and Gerry Knight, Ballina Town. Padraig McHale, chairman Mayo Football League, said: “I would like to congratulate Patrick English and Gerry Knight on winning this prestigious award. They are certainly worthy recipients as both have given a lifetime of service to the game and are highly respected within the county and beyond. It is fitting that an award named after such a great servant is bestowed upon two gentlemen of the game.’’
